Created in 2012 and now in its twelfth year, the biannualEYE International Photography Festivalis the longest-running in photography event in Wales and one of the largest independent photography festivals in the UK, attracting audiences spanning aspiring students to recognised professional photographers from around the globe.

About the Speakers:

Harry Borden

Harry is one of the UK’s finest portrait photographers. His work has appeared in many of the world’s foremost publications, including The New YorkerVogue and Time.

Borden was a World Press Photo prize winner in 1997 and 1999, subsequently participating as a jury member for the awards in 2010 and 2011. He had his first solo exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London in 2005, with the institution currently holding over 100 of his prints in its permanent collection. In 2014, he was made an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society.

In 2017, his book, Survivor: A portrait of the survivors of the Holocaust, was published by Octopus. Described by Martin Parr as “something really to behold…”, and by Alain de Botton as “A masterpiece and deeply moving”, it was also judged one of the 10 best photography books of 2018 by the Kraszna-Krausz Foundation. Borden’s second book, Single Dad, came out in 2021. His third, On Divorce, was released by The School of Life in 2023.

Dr Denise Maxwell

Workshop: "Lights Camera... Income : The BUSINESS of Photography

Tired of shooting for exposure or your portfolio? This workshop is a straight talking no fluff guide to building a real photography business - the kind that pays your rent and funds your gear obsession. 

Led by Dr. Denise Maxwell a photographer that has made her full time living from photography for over 15 years, Denise will take you on a journey of her career showing you how she got to where she got to today. You will get practical tips , honest truths and proven strategies that helped her (and others) go from hobbyist to a high earner. Whether you are just starting out or have paid shoots already under the belt, this workshop will help you to boost your income (not just your exposure).

Dr. Denise Maxwell is the multi genre Photographer, Educator and influencer behind Lensi Photography; covering genres including Music, sports and fashion.

She has photographed some of the most well known people and events in the world including Barak Obama, Usain Bolt and events such as the BAFTAs and Brit Awards.

Her recognition spans these varied genres.

  • She was one of the Commonwealth Games Photographers for Birmingham 2022
  • named as 1 of 7 female documentary photographers to be highlighted by the BBC during lockdown.
  • Her art work has been exhibited at The Midlands Arts Centre, The Harris Museum and The Photography Show.
  • She has had work published in major publications such as OK Magazine, The Independent and Metro.
  • One of 15 female photographers chosen to be exhibited by F22 of The Association of Photographers
  • Was the award winning photographer behind the Starling Bank “Make Money Equal” Campaign
  • She guest lectures at various International Universities and UK Colleges
  • Photography Mentor at The Southbank Centres Reframe Residency for 77 artists in residence
  • Speaking engagements for Canon, BPPA, Photo Days Sweden and Lund and AP Magazine
  • World Sports Photography Awards finalist (in two categories) 2023
  • Freelances for The Times

Alongside continuing to create imagery for clients including The Times, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Goldman Sachs, Amazon and the BBC; Denise continues to speak across the UK sharing her knowledge and experience with over 15 years in the field, specialising in the Business of Photography, teaching photographers how to build a full time profitable business and comfortable income and creating educational shadowing experiences for emerging photographers on real life commissions, 121 mentoring and developing her “Learn to Earn Course”

Joel Goodman  

Joel Goodman is a freelance photojournalist, working in news, features and documentary, in the UK, directly for clients and news outlets. HIs photos are also represented by the agency London News Pictures. His work has been published in press, magazines and on television around the world. He’s a member of the British Press Photographers’ Association and believes strongly in a free and open press, in which the witness of photography plays a critical role both in current affairs and in documenting our world. As a photographer he is self-taught. In addition he is NCTJ (National Council for the Training of Journalists) trained. The NCTJ was the internationally recognised, reference training for all photojournalists in the UK. Alongside his experience on the road, covering news stories and events in all sorts of environments, he’s worked as a Picture Editor for news agencies and the Manchester Evening News

Phillip Hatcher Moore

Phil Hatcher-Moore is an independent, British photojournalist, currently based in North Wales.

He was named as a PDN 30 New and Emerging Photographer in 2014. His work from eastern D. R. Congo was exhibited at the Visa pour l'image photojournalism festival in Perpignan, France in 2013, and the same year he was awarded the Special Prize by the 9th Days Japan jury. He was based for five years in Nairobi, Kenya.

Phil has regularly freelanced for Agence France-Presse (AFP), as well contributing to international publications including the New York Times, Der SpiegelLe MondeLibération, the Guardian, and Vanity Fair (Italia).

Simon Norfolk

Award winning Simon Norfolk is a landscape photographer, who has dedicated himself to document some of the most serious contemporary war zones and refugee crisis, often depicting the aftermath of the conflicts and its results on land and people. 

He has produced four photo book monographs of his work. He lives and works in Brighton and has also lived in Kabul.  His work is featured regularly in National Geographic, the New York Times Magazing and The Guardian Weekend.  

Eileen Perrier

Eileen Perrier is a British portrait photographer, living in London. She has had solo exhibitions at the Whitechapel Gallery and The Photographers Gallery in London and her work is held in the collections of Tate, Light Work and UK Parliament.   

Perrier was a senior lecturer in Photography between 2005 - 2022 at University of Westminster and is currently an Associate Lecturer at University of the Arts London (UAL).

Memories of Love Returned (12A)

Uganda/2024/Documentary/Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine/ 1 hour 16 mins

On April 24th, 2002 Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine's car broke down in the small town of Mbirizi, Uganda. While waiting for the car's repair he stumbled upon a small photo studio and met photographer Kibaate Aloysius Ssalongo, whose work spanned from the late 1950's up till 2006 when he passed away. This chance encounter turned into a 22 year journey documenting and exploring Kibaate's life and photography and the profound impact it had on Ntare's life and the lives of the entire community he documented.
